In 2007, ADEM estimated Alabamians generated 9.9 pounds of trash per person per day, compared to the national average of 4.6 pounds per person per day. Alabama recycling rates in 2007 were about 8 percent, whereas the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports the national average at 33.4 percent.
